Who was Picasso ?

Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and theatre designer who spent most of his adult life in France

One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture the co-invention of college  and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore.

Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), and the anti-war painting Guernica (1937), a dramatic portrayal of the bombing of Guernica by German and Italian air forces during the Spanish Civil War.

In May 2019, Picasso’s “Guitar on a Table” was sold at an auction for more than $37 million.

The painting, which is part of the Cubist artist’s “instruments” series, is one of the most expensive paintings ever sold.

While the painting’s high price tag may be impressive, it’s not surprising given Picasso’s stature as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

His work has fetching prices at auction houses for decades, and “Guitar on a Table” is no exception.

So why did this painting sell for so much money?

Part of the reason is that Picasso is one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century. His paintings are highly coveted by collectors and often sell for tens of millions of dollars.

This particular painting also has a rich history. It was created in 1924, during what is considered Picasso’s “classical period.” The painting depicts a still life scene with a guitar, fruit and a few other objects arranged on a table.

At the time it was painted, Picasso was living in Paris with his wife, Olga  Khokhlova. The couple were part of the city’s lively social scene and often hosted parties at their apartment.

It’s believed that “Guitar on a Table” was inspired by one of these parties. According to Christie’s, the painting “captures the energy and glamour of 1920s Parisian café society.”

The painting has changed hands several times over the years and was most recently owned by American.

In May 2019, Picasso’s “Guitar on a Table” painting sold for $106.5 million at Sotheby’s in New York. The buyer was anonymous, and the painting was purchased through an intermediary.

This is not the first time that “Guitar on a Table” has been up for auction. In 2012, it failed to sell when it was offered at Christie’s in London with an estimated price of $12 million to $18 million.

The painting dates back to 1914 and is one of a series of paintings that Picasso created that were inspired by musical instruments. This particular painting features a guitar made out of cardboard and paper with its strings cut off.

The sale of “Guitar on a Table” is just another example of the high prices that Picasso’s work continues to fetch at auction. In 2015, his painting “Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O)” set the record for the most expensive painting ever sold, fetching $179 million at Christie’s in New York.
