Ronaldo’s role in Portugal’s success…
1. Ronaldo’s role in Portugal’s success
In Portugal’s march to the final of Euro 2016, captain Cristiano Ronaldo played a pivotal role.
His leadership and inspiration helped his team-mates overcome some difficult moments during the tournament, and he scored some important goals along the way.
In the final itself, it was Ronaldo who kept Portugal in the game with his brilliant equalising goal against France. He then stepped up again in the shootout, scoring the winning penalty to give Portugal their first ever major trophy.
Without Ronaldo, it is doubtful that Portugal would have been able to achieve such success at Euro 2016. He is truly a world-class player and an outstanding leader.
What other players have achieved this feat?
In order to become the first man to score at FIFA World Cups, Cristiano Ronaldo had to achieve a number of things.
Firstly, he had to make sure that he was selected for Portugal’s World Cup squad.
Then, he had to ensure that he started in their opening game against Germany.
Finally, he had to find the back of the net at least once during the tournament.
Fortunately for Ronaldo, he was able to tick all of those boxes.
He was one of Portugal’s leading players during their successful qualifying campaign and was an ever-present in their line-up throughout the tournament itself.
And, as far as scoring goals goes, Ronaldo did not disappoint.
He netted three times in total, including a vital equaliser against Iran in Portugal’s final group game.
In doing so, Ronaldo became the first man to score at three different World Cups and also wrote his name into the history books as the first Portuguese player to score at a World Cup finals tournament. Not bad for a 33-year-old!
